Day 1

Arrival in Addis Ababa

We touch down in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s spirited capital rising dramatically across the highlands — a city where ancient stories sit shoulder-to-shoulder with modern buzz. As we settle into our hotel, the city’s bold rhythm already starts pulling us in. Fun fact: Addis sits at over 2,300 metres, making it one of the world’s highest capitals — perfect for that crisp, diffused mountain light photographers adore.

We jump straight into an immersive photography trail, beginning at the National Museum, home of “Lucy,” the 3.2-million-year-old hominin who changed the world’s understanding of human origins. The soft museum light and textured artefacts create a beautiful playground for intimate portraits and detail shots. From here, we dive into Merkato — a living, breathing organism of colour, hustle, and humanity. It’s one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, and every turn throws up fascinating frames: spice merchants, fabric sellers, coffee roasters, and the joyful chaos of daily Addis.

As the afternoon light turns golden, we climb to Mount Entoto — once the seat of the Ethiopian empire — for sweeping panoramic shots of the city shimmering below. Our final stop is St. George’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of octagonal architecture where spiritual devotion, incense, hymns, and history come together in one powerful visual tapestry.

In the evening, we gather for a hearty Ethiopian feast — injera spreads, aromatic stews, and dancers spinning to tribal rhythms — the perfect first night to fire up our lenses and spirits for the adventure ahead.

Addis Ababa - Jinka - Turmi

After breakfast, we catch our morning flight to Jinka and sweep straight into the raw, untamed beauty of the Omo Valley as we drive toward Turmi, the heartland of the Hamar people. The landscapes shift dramatically—acacia-dotted plains, red-earth trails, and wide horizons that feel straight out of an ancient epic. If it’s a Monday, we dive into the electrifying Hamar weekly market, a whirl of colour, barter calls, ochre-painted faces, and rhythmic energy. It’s a dream for photographers—every corner bursting with expressive portraits, textured scenes, and moments that unfold faster than we can click. Fun fact: the Hamar are known for their elaborate hairstyles made with butter and ochre, a tradition that can take hours to perfect!

If a bull-jumping ceremony happens that day, we’re in for one of the most dramatic rites of passage in East Africa—raw, primal, and visually stunning. As the sun drops, we chase the golden hour in a Hamar village, capturing silhouettes, intricate beadwork, and everyday life glowing in warm light.

The moment we step in, the Karo people greet us with a burst of creativity—this is a community celebrated for its striking body art, where chalk, ash, and ochre transform into patterns inspired by nature. Fun fact: some of their designs mimic the spots of a guinea fowl, a bird considered a symbol of beauty and alertness here.

We spend the day moving between portraits, candid moments, and sweeping river vistas—each frame telling its own raw, powerful story. The Karo’s sense of style is mesmerising: elaborate headdresses, detailed scarification, and the way they use the riverbank as an open-air studio add a sense of drama to every shot. The journey itself feels like stepping off the map, and the moment we arrive, the visual storytelling begins. Women welcome us in radiant layers of colourful beads, each strand representing identity, lineage, and pride. Men carry bold scarification marks across their bodies—a living archive of courage, resilience, and rites of passage. Fun fact: the Nyangatom’s beadwork isn’t just ornamental; it’s a social language that reveals marital status, age groups, and achievements.

We spend the morning photographing their daily rhythms—capturing the way sunlight catches the dust, how expressions shift in the quiet moments, and the sheer power of traditions preserved far from the modern world. This is Dassanech country—an ancient community proudly known as the “People of the Delta”, whose roots stretch deep into the shifting channels of the Omo. Fun fact: the Dassanech are one of the few tribes in the region whose identity is tied more to territory than lineage, making them wonderfully diverse and adaptive. We cross the Omo River by a traditional wooden boat, letting the river breeze set the tone for the day as the village rises into view like a living canvas.

The afternoon becomes a storyteller’s dream. We photograph elaborate braided hairstyles, vibrant beadwork, and the easy rhythm of daily life—children chasing goats, elders tending fires, fishermen casting nets against the golden light. Fun fact: Arbore women traditionally shave their heads before marriage, symbolising a fresh chapter in life—one of the many traditions that make this tribe so visually fascinating.

After breakfast, we journey into the wild heart of Mago National Park, where every turn feels like stepping into a living ethnographic museum. Here, we meet the legendary Mursi, a tribe celebrated for their bold lip plates—once symbols of strength and beauty, now iconic markers of identity. Fun fact: some plates can reach over 12 centimetres, turning every portrait into a study of resilience and artistry. As we photograph their striking silhouettes, textured skin tones, and expressive eyes, we dive deeper into the world of Donga, the traditional stick-fighting ritual that showcases power, pride, and poetic movement.

We continue toward Jinka, making an unmissable stop to meet the Bana boys, famed for their gravity-defying “stick-walking” tradition—an ingenious skill used to herd cattle across tall grasses. We kick off the morning diving into the world of the Ari tribe, one of the largest and most culturally expressive communities in the Omo Valley. Their colourful homes burst with hand-painted patterns, and their pottery traditions stretch back centuries—fun fact: Ari clay work is so renowned that many neighbouring tribes trade for it! As we wander through their lively fields and workshops, every corner turns into a frame-worthy moment, a riot of texture, colour and raw human expression.

We then make our way to the Jinka Museum, a treasure trove that pulls together the stories, beliefs and customs of more than a dozen tribes.
