Day 1

Arrival in Addis Ababa

We touch down in Addis Ababa and the energy of Ethiopia hits us instantly—bold, joyful, and humming with stories older than history itself. The city wastes no time pulling us in. We kick things off with a deep dive into its heartbeat, starting at the iconic National Museum, where the legendary 3.2-million-year-old fossil Lucy casually hangs out. Fun fact: she’s only about one metre tall, but she changed everything we know about human evolution—tiny queen, massive impact.

Next, we wander into the Holy Trinity Cathedral, soaking in its shimmering stained glass and powerful history. Addis loves to surprise, so we climb up to Entoto Hill for sweeping views that feel like the city is giving us a warm hug from above. The air is crisp, the scenery cinematic, and the stories endless.

Markets buzz around us with colourful spices, fresh coffee beans, hand-woven treasures, and that unmistakable Ethiopian rhythm. We taste, explore, laugh, and let the city set the pace for the adventure ahead.

This is our first taste of Ethiopia—and trust us, it’s already irresistible. Let’s dive right in, Monkey Inc style.

Day 2

Addis Ababa - Lalibela

We take off from Addis Ababa and glide towards Lalibela, a place so mystical it’s often called the “New Jerusalem.” Touch down and step straight into a world where legends whisper through the mountains. Our day begins with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony — fresh beans roasting over hot coals, the scent swirling through the air like a warm hug from the highlands. Fun fact: Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, discovered when a shepherd noticed his goats dancing after nibbling wild beans. No wonder the brew tastes this magical.

We wander into Lalibela’s astonishing rock-hewn churches, chiselled directly from volcanic stone over 800 years ago. Each carving feels alive, each tunnel echoes with stories, and each doorway pulls us further into Ethiopia’s spiritual soul. Move slowly, breathe it all in, and let the energy of this sacred town wrap around us as the sun dips behind the rugged cliffs, turning the whole landscape gold.

Day 3

A Day in Lalibela

We dive into Lalibela today, a place that honestly feels like someone hit pause on time and left the magic intact. After a solid breakfast, we head straight into the world of Ethiopia’s legendary rock-hewn churches—carved top to bottom from single slabs of volcanic rock. Fun fact: locals believe angels helped carve these masterpieces overnight, and once you see the precision, you’ll understand why that story sticks.

We wander through narrow tunnels and hidden passageways connecting the ancient complexes, each corner humming with centuries of devotion. And then—bam—the iconic Church of St. George appears, shaped like a perfect Greek cross dipped into the earth. Standing there feels surreal, like we’ve stumbled onto a movie set that forgot to tell us we’re the stars.

As the incense drifts through the air and soft chants echo around us, we soak up the spiritual energy that makes Lalibela one of Africa’s most extraordinary sacred sites. This day hits differently—in the best way.

Day 4

Lalibela - Gondar

Today, we trade the mystical rock-hewn churches of Lalibela for the regal grandeur of Gondar, Ethiopia’s former imperial capital — and what a glow-up! We fly in, hearts buzzing with excitement, and set off to explore the UNESCO-listed Royal Enclosure, a real-life castle district where stone towers and turrets whisper stories of emperors and court intrigue. These aren’t just photogenic fortresses — they were the political and spiritual heartbeat of medieval Ethiopia.

Next, we wander into the Church of Debre Berhan Selassie, which feels like stepping into a dream: the ceilings are covered in hundreds of painted angelic faces, vibrant, glowing, and playful — it’s like they’re watching over us as we walk in. Fun fact: some of these frescoes are rumored to have been painted by monks who only used natural pigments made from local plants and minerals.

Later, we meander through the ancient ruins around the enclosure — these stones have seen coronations, royal feasts, and centuries of Ethiopian history. As we stroll, we imagine the emperors who once walked here, their sandals echoing on the same pathways we traverse.

We wrap up the day soaking in the atmosphere, feeling connected to a living past that’s rich, raw, and deeply spiritual. Travel with us, and you’ll feel like you’re walking through a real-life fairy tale — only with more laughter, colourful adventures, and maybe a few monkey-inc style selfies in front of castle towers.

Day 5

A Day in Simien Mountains Gondar

We start the morning fuelled by breakfast before setting off into the wild beauty of Simien Mountains National Park—one of Africa’s most dramatic highland landscapes. The air feels crisper here, the cliffs drop into cinematic valleys, and every turn reveals a view that makes you stop, grin, and forget everything else.

As we trek along the escarpments, we meet Ethiopia’s celebrity residents: the Gelada baboons—fun fact, they’re the only grass-eating primates on Earth and they flirt by flashing their red chests! If we’re lucky, we might even spot the rare Walia ibex balancing on impossible ledges like mountain gymnasts.

Panoramic viewpoints follow us throughout the day, each one looking like it’s straight out of a fantasy film. By the time we return to Gondar, boots dusty and cameras full, the sunset feels softer, the evening calmer, and our hearts louder with everything the Simiens have shown us. What a day.

We set off from Gondar and glide through Ethiopia’s highlands, a patchwork of green slopes, tiny villages, and kids waving like we’re celebrities on tour. The road opens into Bahirdar, where life moves at lake pace—slow, calm, a little magical. Then it’s time to cruise across the shimmering waters of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile and home to centuries of mystery.

Fun fact: many of the monks here still use ancient Ge’ez manuscripts that look straight out of a museum. We step onto lush islands to explore monasteries painted floor-to-ceiling with bold, story-filled frescoes.

Ura Kidane Mehret steals the show with its vibrant murals and hidden treasures guarded for generations. Along the way, we watch pelicans swoop, fishermen row sleek papyrus boats, and the lake glow gold in the afternoon sun. It’s peaceful, powerful, and packed with stories that make us feel like we’re walking through a living history book—with better views, of course.

We kick off this day with a short flight out of Bahirdar, leaving the shimmering Lake Tana and its misty monasteries behind — but only for now! Touching down in Addis Ababa, we instantly feel the heartbeat of Ethiopia’s vibrant capital. The city greets us with its iconic landmarks: we wander vast public squares, clamber up to panoramic viewpoints, and soak in the chaotic beauty of the markets, where colourful scarves, handwoven baskets, and spicy coffee beans vie for attention.

We dive into Addis’ cultural madness: rhythmic Ethiopian beats spill from street corners, and we taste ful, injera, and fiery berbere-spiced delicacies that make our taste-buds dance. Did you know Addis Ababa means “new flower” in Amharic? Perfect for the fresh burst of memories we’re harvesting.

In the afternoon, we drift through local artisan shops and pick up last-minute treasures — maybe a delicate beaded necklace or bold coffee set — knowing these souvenirs carry stories, not just colours. As the sun dips, we find a cozy rooftop for an unforgettable farewell dinner, complete with traditional live music and soulful voices. We raise our glasses (or coffee cups) to the laughs, the wild rides, and the heart of Ethiopia, feeling alive, wild, and deeply grateful for this journey together.

Day 8

Addis Ababa - Departure

This morning arrives with that sweet mix of gratitude and “wow-did-we-really-just-do-that?” energy. After a lazy, delicious breakfast, we pack up with full hearts and dustings of Ethiopian magic still clinging to us. As we head to the airport, we glance back at a country that spoils us with stories—ancient kingdoms carved in stone, highland horizons that look straight out of a painting, and coffee so good it practically rewires the soul.

Fun fact: Ethiopia is the only African country never colonised, which explains why its traditions feel so proudly, beautifully intact. Another one? Time here runs on its own unique clock—literally! Ethiopia follows a 13-month calendar, so technically, we’ve just lived a bonus chapter.

As we board our flight home, we carry memories of warm smiles, spontaneous dances, flavour-packed meals, and landscapes that shift from volcanic drama to lush valleys in a heartbeat. This chapter may close, but the spirit of Ethiopia stays buzzing inside us. Until the next adventure—safe travels and stay wild.
